  39. Just a thought ... In my quest to get a good USR Sportster out of
  40. Gateway2000 (I'm on modem number 6) I've had a few with the (now well-known)
  41. "pausing" problem. I normally use Win95 which is set up nicely, but a few
  42. days ago, I was fooling with PPP on Linux (not set up nicely) and
  43. inadvertantly made a connection with the speaker left on after handshaking.
  44. So I got to hear the pauses. The modems were retraining (hear the "bongs")
  45. or at least in my case trying to, since they seemed to wind up at the same
  46. speed as before.

  48. This problem seems to be widespread among Gateway users; I don't know about
  49. "real" USR Sportsters. And the telephone line in question has served me well
  50. for years. Gateway admits a "pausing" problem; I don't know if they know it
  51. seems to be due to excessive (and even unnecessary) retraining.

  53. If after the pause your xfer rate is less, maybe they really are retraining,
  54. possibly because of a noisy line, or bad error correction ... maybe just for
  55. kicks.

  57. So, turn on the speaker and, if this is what's happening, at least you'll
  58. know it.

  60. Of course, there's always congestion and bottlenecks on the network to deal
  61. with too.
